En el Asilo de Ancianos
We had two important civic actions during December. The first one was a food and toys collection in collaboration with Mirame TV. Our school is located in a middle-low class area where lots of families haven’t got basic needs. Because it was Christmas time, we also collected toys for children.

JANUARY greek school activities
Following the Comenius programme, a presentation was organized in cooperation with the local authorities and the Archaeology Department. There was a presentation of the ottoman buildings still existing in the town of Mytilini. After that, another journey in time was followed as the students were taken to three ancient cities of Asia Minor, Pergamon, Smyrni and Efessos. In the discussion that followed similarities and differences between those ancient sites and the town of Mytilini were pointed out.

JANUARY spanish ACTIVITIES 2014
We celebrated in our school The Peace International Day. It was a great event, where our students and parents ran for a good cause. We collected money for children in Ethiopia who have extreme problems of poverty. Each student looked for sponsors (who were relatives or friends) who contributed money for the effort of our children in the race.
As civic citizens we are, we recycled cans to create a vertical garden in the main playground of the school. Parents and students painted those cans and planted different kind of plants all together as a family.

Mickiewicza. Noworoczna Zbiórka Żywności była kolejną, wspólną inicjatywą Federacji Polskich Banków Żywności i Tesco zaadresowaną do klientów sieci. FEBRUARY Spanish ACTIVITIES 2014
Once a week, in our school library, we have done a new activity about our partners´ countries. We asked our partners for a traditional tale from their countries and we elaborated several activities related to them. It was a varied work, in which our students have known and worked with tales from other countries, being strengthened with different contents, such as flags, locations, traditions etc… We strongly recommend it. This month it has been Portugal and Poland turn; next coming is Greece and after that, Turkey.

Greek civic actions - February 2014
Tree-planting in Mytilene
Our school took part in a tree planting action together with the Municipality of Mytilene, the forestal service, the volunteer firefighters association, the boy scouts and the parent’s association.
The aim of this action was to show the need for all of us to participate in making our town look better and adding to its healthier atmosphere by planting more trees which give more oxygen.
An agronomist explained the procedure to our pupils. The work begins with the help of a volunteer firefighter. All the pupils participate with enthusiasm-they feel happy to be the creators of new plant life.
Young and old in action planting and filling the holes with soil before watering the new plants!!

THE PORTUGUESE “RED CROSS” - 2nd visit
CRUZ VERMELHA PORTUGUESA - 2ª Visita
On the 6th February Mr. Humberto Calado paid us another visit. He gave us some more information about the work of “RED CROSS” and taught us what to do in case of accident or danger.
A student acted as an accident victim and we were showed how to move him.
It was a funny and interesting activity.

A VISIT TO “THE portuguese RED CROSS” FACILITIES
VISITA ÀS INSTALAÇÕES DA CRUZ VERMELHA
The volunteer Mr. Humberto Calado came twice to our school and told us about his work in The Red Cross. So, we decided to visit the facilities on the 12th February, a rainy afternoon.
We were hosted by a very kind employee who showed us around. We saw: the solidary shop, the canteen where every day some families get their free meals. We spoke with another employee who does house care, especially to old people and helps them with their personal hygiene, house cleaning and meals.
We went downstairs and visited the laundry, the playroom, the study and the gymnasium. There we were told about the rules and schedules of those places and the activities offered to children every afternoon and on Saturdays all day long.
In the gym we talked, asked questions and played some games. During our visit we could understand how important the task of a volunteer is and the difference one can make in others’ life. To become a VOLUNTEER is an opportunity to make a better world.

On the 26th February we celebrated Carnival with our friends of the APPACDM Association in Escurinho Farm.
During the Comenius Club sessions we decorated Carnival masks. With felt pens, feathers, imagination and fantasy we created beautiful and fantastic masks to offer to our friends at the APPACDM Association.
When we arrived we gave the masks and WHAT A SUCESS!!! Everyone wore their masks happily.
We mingled, took photos, walked around and had tea...
Finally the afternoon was over and we returned to school pleased due to the success of our work.

O Clube Comenius e a Associação “Pão e Paz”
(Comenius Club and "bread and peace" Association) (Portugal)
“Pão e Paz” is a nonprofit organization which helps people in need in a daily basis, providing free meals.
Our Club decided to help them and we asked students, parents, teachers and staff to bring some products: milk, oil, pasta, rice, flour, sugar…
On the 10th March 2014 we went to this association and gave them two heavy bags with the products.
Helping others and do volunteering work is a way of developing in our students their social awareness.
We are already preparing another volunteering action.

Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year.
On 22nd April 2014 we celebrated Earth Day at our school too. During classes the students made useful things from tins, bottles, scrap paper and other “rubbish”. They learnt how to recycle things. They know that it is very important to take, for instance, empty bottles to the bottle bank for recycling. All they works were shown on a school display. Now our student know that waste can have a second life.

22 kwietnia obchodzimy Dzień Ziemi. Z tej okazji uczniowie szkoły podstawowej zorganizowali warsztaty pt. Śmieć i co dalej? Podczas warsztatów wykonywali przedmioty użytkowe z puszek, butelek, makulatury itp. Wszystkie prace zaprezentowano na mini wystawie. W ten sposób pokazano, że odpadom można nadać drugie życie.

A day at the pedagogical farm of Pomarinho
The school year is coming to an end and to commemorate it the Club Comenius members spent the 6th of June at the Pomarinho Farm, which belongs to the APCE Association.
There the students did several activities, volunteering work and had fun.
First they had the opportunity of combing two nice donkeys and had a ride on them. For some of them it was the first time on a donkey. They learned how to make bread and cheese. They actually did fresh bread and ate it with the tasty cheese made by them.
For the volunteering activity students painted a “quiosque”# which it’s going to be used on the 13th of June, St. Anthony’s day.
By the end of the day students participated in a Peddy Paper game to learn more about the farm and nature. They still had time to enjoy all the amusements provided by the facilities.
It was a well spend day in The APCE Farm (Cerebral Paralysis Association) with whom Comenius Club will continue to work next school year.

"Turysto!

Greek civic actions October 2014
In co-operation with Helmepa (Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association), an NGO that focuses on keeping the Greek seas and beaches clean, our students and teachers volunteered to clean a specific beach close to the town of Mytilini.
Equipped with plastic gloves and bags, the teams set out to collect the rubbish that ruins the beach!
There was a variety of rubbish collected and counted for statistic reasons. Among others, old tires, plastic crates and irrigation tubes were found on the beach possibly carried there by the sea itself. In the end, everyone was happy and enjoyed the new, clean beach. They all cheered and said they would do it again soon!!

Among others, old tires, plastic crates and irrigation tubes were found on the beach possibly carried there by the sea itself. In the end, everyone was happy and enjoyed the new, clean beach. They all cheered and said they would do it again soon!!

Polish volunteering activity in December
Piles of pennies
This year Zespół Szkół Specjalnych in Ostrowiec Św. has been taking part in the activity „Piles of pennies” organized by the Society Our Home. The aim of the action is collecting money for family children’s homes, foster families and their pupils. During the action we are collecting coins. A very important goal is also showing the children and teenagers that even coins could create a fund and help people in need.
At our school each class participated in the action and prepared money boxes for coins. The group which had created the most original box and the group in which had collected the greatest amount of money won a special prize. The final was held on 5th December 2014.

We like helping
For a few years our school has been taking part in plastic caps collection, which are given to the association “Animals”. The club of young ecologists took this initiative at our school. The caps are sold and the money are used to help the homeless animals. Last year 2014 we collected a huge amount of caps. |

Giving Donation
On the 14th January, in the afternoon, we went to the Pedagogical Farm of Pomarinho to give all the animal food and some money that we gathered during the months of November and December.
There the Kindergarten teacher Teresa Fernandes and a member of the directive board of APCE welcomed and thanked us for our initiative. They asked us how we gathered all the products and we explained why we did it. Teacher Teresa talked a little bit of all the work done by APCE and afterwards we walked around the farm to watch the animals and play.
Before coming back we had a surprise: teacher Teresa prepared us a fine snack (natural orange juice, lemonade, lemon tea and muffins) which we enjoyed with delight.
It was time for going home, but we decided to pay them another visit next March.

Our civic actions – January 2015
It is a New Year’s custom in Greece to cut a traditional pie, called “Vassilopita”. It is a special pie which contains a lucky coin. Whoever finds it in his/her piece of the pie, receives a special gift. It is also considered a sign of good luck for the whole year, for the person who finds the coin. Like every year, the custom was performed at school for students and members of the staff.

“COMENIUS MARKET”
According to the aims of our Comenius Project “Today’s European” we did another volunteering activity. This time we gathered money to the APPACDM association (Association of parents and friends of mental handicapped people), one of our local partners. This association provides lots of different services and therapies to handicapped people. Since 1990 there is also a community home for 15 people with mental or physical handicap. This home overcomes family problems, provides an organized mental and physical healthy environment, promotes the social and personal autonomy and provides interaction and leisure moments.
In this home the guests have hygiene and medical care, meals, clothes laundry and 24 hours supervision.
Thus, to help this association we realized a Comenius Market at the school cloisters on the 9th and 10th February. Books, school objects, toys, games, accessories were offered by students and their families and sold to the school community. The money will be used to the supply of personal hygiene products to be given to the APPACDM community home.
At the same time students are gathering products and money at school and in the local community.
As usual students, teachers and school staff joined us in this initiative.

greek february activity
During the past few years, Greece has been receiving a great number of people of all ages – and a lot of children- who flee their homes in countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Syria to get away from the war and find a better future for them and their families in Europe. These people seek shelter temporarily in Greece and providing for them is –to a great extent- the work of volunteers.
So, our teachers, students and the parent association with the help of the volunteering team, called “The village of All Together” gathered food and other necessary goods to help these people.
Our students happily gathered and put all the food in boxes.
On the appointed day, teachers, students and parents visited the location where the refuges are staying and distributed the goods with the help of the volunteering team. Then, through an interpreter, there was a discussion where the students and teachers communicated with refuges.

Our Comenius programme’s activities
Trying to know our partners better, our students and their teachers made traditional Polish recipes.
They baked a cake made of walnuts and almonds, covered in chocolate and an apple pie. Needless to say that in the end, we all enjoyed tasting the new recipes.

“EASTER EGGS”
To commemorate Easter we spent the afternoon of the 11th March at the Pedagogical Farm of Pomarinho and we did a nice activity related to it: Easter eggs decoration.
The egg is a very old symbol, before Christian era, which represents fertility and rebirth. Many centuries before Christ people gave each other eggs in the Spring Equinox (21st March) to commemorate the end of winter and the begin of a new season. To have great crops farmers used to bury eggs in their fields. When people began to celebrate the Christian Easter this celebration took part in the Holy Week rituals and Christians considered the egg as a symbol of the resurrection of Christ.
To paint and decorate eggs is also a very ancient custom. The crusaders brought this tradition to Europe in the Middle Age. To paint eggs for the spring festivals was very common among the Egyptians, the Persians, the Phoenicians, the Greeks and the Romans. In the east of Europe, the orthodox became great specialist in painting eggs making real masterpieces of it.
In Poland, one of our partners’ countries in the Comenius Project “Today’s European”, this is a very important tradition. There are eggs so beautifully decorated that they are considered like real jewels. People use mainly chicken eggs or wooden eggs to decorate.
Thus, we decided to try this ancient art and decorate some eggs. Lots of imagination, with more or less skill and lots of patient from our kindergarten teacher Teresa we followed several steps to fulfil our task.
First step: empty the egg. To do so we need to do two holes with a needle and expel all the content by blowing through one of the holes. Second step: submerge the eggs in different food or natural colouring according to each one preference.
Third step: when the egg is already dried we can decorated it. Using a brunch we can paint and draw whatever we want.
In spite of our clothes being also painted we enjoyed our activity and happily brought our beautiful eggs to school.

A different lunch at school
On the 18th March we had a special lunch at school – Greek cuisine. Greece is one of our partners’ countries at the Comenius Project “Today’s European” and we decided to show its cuisine to our school community.
In the Comenius Club, students surf the Net and found out that Greece has an ancient culinary tradition dating back several millennia.
Many dishes are part of the larger tradition of Ottoman cuisine and their names reveal Arabic, Persian or Turkish roots.
Greek cuisine is a Mediterranean cuisine and makes wide use of olive oil, vegetables and herbs, grains and bread, wine, fish, and various meats, including lamb, poultry, rabbit and pork. Also important are olives, cheese, eggplant (aubergine), zucchini (courgette), and yogurt. Greek desserts are characterized by the dominant use of nuts and honey. Some dishes use filo pastry.
From its rich cuisine we decided to present this menu:
Greek vegetable soup
180 grams of onions

During all week the Comenius Corner showed different cultural information about Greece.
To make this lunch possible our Club Comenius team worked together with the teachers from the Program PES (Program for School Health), the Social School Service and the canteen staff.
We are preparing a Polish lunch to be held in the 3rd term. We hope it could be as enjoyable as this one.
2 leaks,
2 red peppers
300 grams of carrots,
300 g of courgettes
200 grams of tomatoes
200 grams of potatoes
Olive oil, salt, pepper, oregano and parsley

A culinária grega contemporânea utiliza extensivamente o azeite, grãos, pão, vinho, peixes, queijo, presunto e diversos tipos de carnes, incluindo aves e coelho.
2 alhos franceses
2 pimentos vermelhos
300 g de cenouras
300 g de courgettes
200 g de tomates
200 g de batatas
Azeite, sal, pimenta, orégãos e salsa
Macarronada grega
500g de espaguete cozido AL dente
Molho
½ kg de carne moída (patinho)
3 colheres (sopa) de azeite
1 cebola picada
3 dentes de alho
300g de molho de tomate
½ colher (café) de canela em pó
noz moscada e sal a gosto
1 pitada de açúcar
Cobertura
2 colheres (sopa) de manteiga
2 colheres (sopa) de farinha de trigo
½ litro de leite, sal a gosto
100ml de iogurte natural
100g de queijo parmesão ralado
Sobremesa

A nice talk with our Polish friends
We “met” our Polish partners using the new technologies. In the morning of the 25th March we used the SKYPE to chat with them. At the school library some of our Club Comenius’ students sang Portuguese and English songs, introduced themselves and talked about their interests to their friends. The Polish students and teachers sang and played national songs and a student said some words in English, too.
Although different it was a very nice activity. Teacher Filomena Valadas helped us in this initiative taking care of all the informatic details.

Our Comenius programme’s activities / Δράσεις στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος Comenius
Trying to know our partners better, our students and their teachers made traditional Polish recipes.
They baked a cake made of walnuts and almonds, covered in chocolate and an apple pie. Needless to say that in the end, we all enjoyed tasting the new recipes.

Our civic actions (April 2015)
On April 26th, 2015, our school participated in a volunteering action organized by an N.G.O., “Let’s do it Greece”.
In cooperation with the Municipality of Lesvos and the Parent Association, a number of students, teachers and parents, came together and collected rubbish from a local wood and parkland area.
The students were excited to gather a large number of garbage bags full of rubbish and finally dumped it in the rubbish bins, where it should have been put in the first place. They also realized one more time, what voluntary actions can offer to our society.

Στις 26 Απριλίου 2015, το σχολείο μας έλαβε μέρος στην πανελλήνια εθελοντική δράση “Let’s do it Greece”.

Offering some hygiene products
Last February we did a Comenius Market at school where we sold different items offered by the Club Comenius’ students (books, notebooks, games, toys, bags...). We gathered about 44 euros and we bought hygiene products ( tooth paste, tooth brushes, schampoos, deodorants ...)
On the 23rd April in the afternoon we went to the APPACDM community home to deliver those products. We were received by the home manager who explained us how this community home works and answered all our questions.
We also visited the facilities – the bedrooms, the living room and dining room – which are completly adapted to the residents’ needs.
We spent some time with them and we could see that they consider these facilities their HOME, a place where they can find support, love and understanding that sometimes their families can’t give them.

Polish lunch at school
On the 3rd June we had once more a different lunch at school – Polish cuisine. Poland is one of our partners’ countries at the Comenius Project “Today’s European” and we decided to show its cuisine to our school community.
In the Comenius Club, students surf the Net and found out that Polish cuisine has evolved over the centuries to become very eclectic due to Poland's history. Polish cuisine shares many similarities with other Slavic countries, especially Czech, Slovak, Belarusian, Ukrainian and Russian cuisines. It has also been widely influenced by Central European cuisines, namely German, Austrian and Hungarian cuisines as well as Jewish, French, Turkish and Italian culinary traditions.
Polish cuisine is rich in meat, especially pork, chicken and beef (depending on the region), winter vegetables (cabbage in the dish bigos) and herbs. It is also characteristic in its use of various kinds of noodles the most notable of which are kluski as well as cereals such as kasha . Generally speaking, Polish cuisine is hearty and uses a lot of cream and eggs. The traditional dishes are often demanding in preparation. The Polish national dishes are bigos; pierogi ; gołąbki (type of cabbage roll); sour cucumber soup; mushroom soup; tomato soup and barszcz among others.
From its rich cuisine we decided to present this menu:
ROSOL — CHICKEN SOUP

· Sal and pepper
1 knorr liquid seasoning

Optou-se por apresentar a seguinte ementa:
Canja - Rosol
